What About Supplements? How do they fit in with these bodybuilding tips?
by Charles Ishihashi
Ok, let's get one thing straight, right off the bat. Take a look at any picture of some Greek guy from back in
the old days (I mean THIS IS SPARTA! old days) and what do you see?
Some guy that is in pretty good shape. Some guy you likely wouldn't want to meet up in a dark alley, or
accidentally hit on is girl at a bar.
Guess what that guy didn't spend a fortune on?
Supplements.
While supplements can certainly help, they are by no means necessary to acheive even a world class olympic body.
Not at all.
If you do choose to take supplements, make sure you know exactly what you are getting. Because bodybuilding is a
long process, make sure you know how much money you'll really be spending over the long haul.
But to help you out, watch out for these labels:
Clinically Proven
What does this mean? I means they took two different groups, and had them do two different things for a certain
amount of time. At the end, they measure the result, and found it statistically different.
What they don't usually tell you is how different they were. One study they took a group of employees
in Israel, and had them separate into people that ate lots of carbs, and people who ate lots of protein. After
about a six month study, they found that the group that ate more protein and less carbs had a significantly
different weight loss than the other group.
Sounds great, right? Well, the difference was only about 1.6 KG. Over a year. Which is nothing to complain
about, but if you are expected to shell out hundreds of dollars over six months to a year, only to get a small
benefit, it may not be worth it. If possible, check the manufacturers web site and see if they link to the study
where it was "clinically proven." It may not turn out to be such a big deal.
Patented
Uh-huh. The Japanese have a patent on a hat to wear while it rains, that collects rainwater. You can pretty much
patent anything. Don't be impressed.
Doctor Recommended
Once I went to the doctor with a bad case of achilles tendonitis. He "recommended" that I wear two pairs of
socks. Think I can get rich off the "doctor recommended" two socks technique? Neither do I.
All Natural
I suppose that's a good thing. But does it work? Most ice cream is all natural, and I wouldn't
recommend that as part of your bodybuilding diet.
Scientifically Formulated
The opposite of "All Natural." Usually means it will cost you more money. Lab scientists don't come cheap, you
know.
Research Proven
Proven to do what? Make it's developer rich? See the note above about "clinically proven." No proof, no
money.
Used for Thousands of Years
So why do you expect me to pay for it all of a sudden?
Proprietary Bend
"Proprietary" only means it's a secret formula, like the "special sauce" on a Big Mac. It's either secret so
they can fill it up with junk, or they don't want anybody to steal their secret recipe. Usually the first one. If
it really is a secret recipe that works, just ask around and see if anybody you know has been using it for the long
term.
